Fear Drives Woman To Get Double Mastectomy

If you were afraid that you had a risk factor of getting breast cancer would you have a surgeon cut your breasts off? 

That is exactly what one Chief of Breast Surgery did! She was so afraid that she would follow in the footsteps of her mom that she actually underwent a preventive double mastectomy.  Yes, yes that does mean that she had had breasts taken off just in case she might have the chance of getting breast cancer.

This seems insane to those of us that are trying to get bigger breasts without surgery.

There are a couple of types of preventive mastectomies. One of them which is called a total mastectomy is when the doctor removes the entire breast and the nipple. This type of mastectomy is recommended since it removes more tissue. In a subcutaneous mastectomy the doctor removes the breast tissue but leaves the nipple intact.

The story in the Huffington Post doesn’t say which type of surgery this woman had but either way, I think this may be overboard.  I suppose if you were around this type of thing all of the time that fear could grip you.  She said “For me, it was pretty straightforward. I didn’t want to worry for the next 40 years.”

There was a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology where researched took a look into more than 3,000 families out of which nearly 300 of those had breast cancer susceptibility gene mutations. 

It showed that women that had mothers, sisters or daughters (or other first degree relatives) with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations but were without this problem themselves were not at any higher of a risk for breast cancer than other women without relatives. This is a little different than an earlier study which suggested that so called “non-carriers” that had mothers, sisters, daughters (or other first degree relatives) showing these mutations had somewhere between a two-fold and five-fold increased risk.

There are so many studies and beliefs that are linked with breast cancer. It is really difficult to figure out what the real risks are and what you should do. 

Would you have a double mastectomy just because you were afraid that you would possibly get breast cancer?
